Tide In Tide Out Sketchbook
Works in progress…
The audio visual exhibition will be a celebration and expression of my recent journey of self-improvement, a focus for my sobriety, an outlet for my creativity, and as a thank you to my support network. The best thank you I can give to my family and friends would be for them to see me flourish. For me, it will give me a huge sense of achievement and boost my self-esteem. Featuring collaborations with people who have helped me on my journey; other musicians, visual artists, writers, my therapist, and spoken word artists. A soundscape throughout the gallery will reflect my feelings throughout this journey. The floor will be covered with an aerial view of Margate, the ceiling, a projected moving Turneresque dramatic sky with sound-reactive projections and lighting.
Other work that relates to my recovery will evolve during the creative process
For each piece of artwork, the accompanying music will be a musical interpretation of the textures, patterns, and movement observed and an expression of my feelings through my journey. Viewers will be invited to wear headphones to immerse themselves in the music and soundscapes.
A solo (Sunosis) and collaborative (Solarwaves) live AV performances for the opening, during, and closing of the exhibition (also to be streamed live via social media). The music will feature reworked versions of the music and soundscapes from the exhibition and with live projections of the video work by a projection artist (www.walkaboutprojection.co.uk/). The performances will take place in a separate room. My solo set will be a mixture af ambient, downtempo and mid-tempo cinematic glitchy electronica and piano pieces, taking inspiration from the likes of John Hopkins, Ludovico Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and Ludovico Einaudi. The Solarwaves collaboration is with an important friend of mine, Ricky Cox who has been vital in my recovery. The music will be a celebration of our friendship and shared ideals. A dance-floor driven analogue hardware set which part of will also be performed during Ricky’s support gig for Faithless at Dreamland in Margate on the 16th October 2020 (if it goes ahead).
The exhibition will take place in either an established Margate gallery or a hired disused space.
The album will be formed from reworked pieces of music created for the installation and live performances, featuring the collaborators from the show. To be released on a label; Rednetic Records (a label I have released on before) or another.
The project needs funding support because, without it, I wouldn’t have the money to create it. Due to coronavirus, I have lost my main income as a tour guide. I take tourists through the countryside to the likes of Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford, Stratford Upon Avon and the Cotswolds. We rely on American tourists and tours will not start again till possibly next year. I’m now concentrating on my digital content production as income, but this is going to take time and investment to get to a point where I can make a living from it.
If I was unable to go ahead with the exhibition due to social distancing, the live performance would take place as a live stream via youtube and social media and recorded for online use. The video pieces as online video art and used for part of music videos of key tracks.
